Seoul City Hall Expansion

2005 Seoul, Korea

 Site Area
12,710 m2

 Client
SEOUL METROPOLITAN
GOVERNMENT.
The Seoul City Hall Building is located in the center of this thriving, metropolitan Korean city. Built in 1926, the structure is characterized by its stone exterior and distinctly Renaissance flair. A frequent tourist destination, the site features a large grassy plaza and played host to the 2002 world Cup. In an effort to blend the old with the new, the Seoul Metropolitan Government held a local design competition for the city Hall Expansion project. The solid walls will wrap around a glass skin that will flow out of the structure like liquid fabric. The dynamic patterns created will emphasize the relationship between old and new. New atriums and rooftop gardens will flow naturally from the additional space formed from the “fabric” The building will feature administrative offices, meeting space, two conference rooms, a library, lecture halls, and educational spaces. The new lobby will serve as a welcome center to visitors from around the world. Designed to revitalize the Kangbuk area, the City Hall will continue to serve as a symbol of Seoul.
